Suspect Wanted for Murder in Jersey City Arrested in North Carolina

JERSEY CITY, NJ – A second man has been arrested for the November 13th shooting murder of Ishamell McCanny, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Announced.

On Tuesday, Damean Bates, 33, of West Orange, was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, in connection with the fatal shooting of McCanny.

“Bates was arrested at approximately 2:05 p.m. by members of the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force after members of the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force learned of Bates’ location,” according to the HCPO. “Bates is charged with Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1 and N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a. He remains in custody in North Carolina awaiting extradition to New Jersey.”


According to police reports at the time, on Saturday, November 13, 2021, shortly after 4:00 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City after hearing gunshots.

“Responding officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. The victim, later identified as Ishamell McCany, 41, of Jersey City, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m.,” the report read. “A second defendant in the case, Anthony King, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force on Thursday, January 13, 2022.”
