EGG HARBOR, NJ – The Egg Harbor Township Police responded to a home in the West Atlantic City section of the city to find a 12-year-old boy unconscious. Police determined a friend of his family had tased the boy.

The incident happened on Monday at around 2:06 pm.

Police said they arrived on the scene to find an unconscious and unresponsive twelve-year-old male who had been shot in the head with a taser.

“An investigation revealed that an older male friend of the family had stopped by the residence. The male, identified as 68-year-old Luis Surita Jr. of Atlantic City, engaged in horseplay with the twelve-year-old during his stay,” the department said. “During the interaction, Surita discharged a Taser that he had on his person, striking the juvenile in the head, and delivered one or more shocks to the child, rendering him unconscious.”

Police and EMT responders transported the child to Cooper Hospital in Camden, where he was later reported to be conscious and in stable condition.

“Surita was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Child Abuse, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance,” the department said in a statement. “His charges were placed on a warrant, and he was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility. The child has since been released from the hospital. However, the long-term implications of the injury are not known.”
