UTICA, NY – Two men were arrested and charged with various drug charges after police found suspicious packages during a routine traffic stop.

“On April 13th, 2022 at approximately 10:25PM officers with the Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling a Hot Spot location relative to recent shots fired calls when they conducted a motor vehicle stop on James St near Steuben St for NYSV&TL violations,” the Utica Police Department said.

The agency added, “As they were speaking with the occupants, cause was developed to request the passenger from the vehicle due to behaviors that he was exhibiting toward the officers. As they were having him exit, another officer noticed a large corner knot bag on the passenger floorboard containing suspected narcotics. This male, Robert Cullen age 38 of Utica was then detained and the contraband was secured.”

During a conversation with the driver, it was learned that he also possessed a large quantity of narcotics on his person, and this was located and secured by the officers. The driver, Penta Thomas age 45 of Utica, was detained, and both parties were then transported to the Utica Police Department.
