College Pitcher Tackled Player After Hitting Go-Ahead Home Run

College baseball in North Central Texas heated up this week when North Central’s Josh Phillips smacks a home run and is tackled by Weatherford pitcher Owen Woodward as he rounds third. There seemed to be words spoken as Phillips rounded second base prompting the umpire to point at the runner. Seconds later, NCT pitcher Woodward charged the runner as he rounded third and tackled him.

A scuffle then broke out between the teams after the hit, but was soon quieted by coaches and umpires.

“We are shocked and disappointed at what happened in our game today,” Weatherford said in a statement. “We do not condone this type of behavior. We have worked hard to build a program with the highest of standards. We are completely embarrassed by this incident, and we apologize to North Central Texas College and the fans of WC baseball. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated.”

The game, played Wednesday, was immediately suspended by the umpires until further notice.

Weatherford College said Woodward is now facing possible disciplinary actions and possible expulsion. The Weatherford College Police Department is now investigating the incident as a possible assault.
