EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ – Police in Egg Harbor Township today determined the cause of a crash Wednesday evening was due to careless driving and cell phone usage.

According to the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, officers responded to a motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:12 pm on Fire Road in the area of Delilah Road, in the Farmington section of the Township.

“A 1998 Nissan Maxima, operated by Donald Defeo, 40 years of age from Egg Harbor Township was traveling Southbound on Fire Road when he lost control, left the roadway and struck a pole,” the Egg Harbor Township Police Department said in a report on Thursday. “The crash caused power to be out to the traffic light at Delilah Road and Fire Road to be shut down due to downed power and other utility lines. Mr. Defeo was not injured in the crash. Traffic in the area was detoured for over 12 hours for clearing the scene of downed wires and poles.”

Defeo was issued tickets for careless driving, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and using his cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, according to the department.
