CUMBERLAND, MD – The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office has a new high-tech crime-fighting tool to help during crime scene investigations.

According to the department, deputies deployed the new system when they responded to the area of Memorial Avenue, to assist Cumberland Police Department with crime scene mapping.

“Deputies brought with them a newly purchased Faro Zone Inc. laser crime scene mapping system. The system was purchased in February using grant funding, with this being the first operational deployment,” the department said. “A Faro Zone trainer traveled from Atlanta, GA to Allegany County to provide free training to both Cumberland Police Officers and Deputies.”

The technology produces scale diagrams of crash and crime scenes in both 2D and 3D. It also allows for faster processing of the area to allow the normal public operation to occur sooner. The department said the first deployment will be the first of many to come as it will be a tool regularly used to document future crime and accident scenes.
