Police Investigating Fatal Crash on I-495

WILMINGTON, DE – A passenger in a crash on I-495 near Wilmington Friday night was killed as a result fo her injuries, according to the Delaware State Police.

Police reported at 9:24 p.m., a 2007 Grand Marquis driven by a 65-year-old man from Newark, DE was traveling southbound on I-495 south of Philadelphia Pike when the collision occurred. 

“The Marquis left its lane of travel at a bend in the roadway and entered the median where the driver’s side of the vehicle struck a guardrail,” DSP said. “As a result of the collision the vehicle overturned and came to rest on its roof.The 65-year-old operator of the Marquis was transported to Christiana Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”


According to a police report, the 64-year-old female front seat passenger was transported to Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

Southbound lanes of I-495 were closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

Both the operator and passenger were wearing their seatbelts.  Impairment on the part of the operator is pending a toxicology analysis.  The investigation into this collision is ongoing.
