DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Del Rio Sector’s Eagle Pass Station apprehended five large groups of migrants in less than 31 hours. They were encountered almost immediately after they illegally entered the United States and three were apprehended in a span of 10 hours.
The U.S. Border Patrol categorizes groups of 100 or more undocumented migrants as “large groups.” During the current fiscal year, Del Rio Sector has encountered 108 such groups, which accounts for approximately half the large groups encountered by Border Patrol nationwide.
On May 14, at approximately 11:32 a.m., a group of 129 undocumented migrants were apprehended just after making illegal entry into the United States. The group consisted of 129 migrants from six different countries including 78 Cubans, three Peruvians, 28 Colombians, 18 Venezuelans, one Mexican, and one Nicaraguan. A more extensive breakdown showed 76 single adult males, 32 single adult females and seven family units.
Later that day, at approximately 7:58 p.m., 126 undocumented migrants were apprehended shortly after making illegal entry into the United States. The group of 126 migrants consisted of 61 Cubans, 40 Colombians, 12 Venezuelans, and 13 Peruvians. A demographic breakdown revealed 69 single adult males, 27 single adult females, 29 family unit migrants, and one unaccompanied child.
On May 15, at approximately 7:30 a.m., 107 undocumented migrants were apprehended just after making illegal entry into the United States. The group of 107 migrants consisted of 89 Cuban nationals, 14 Venezuelan nationals, two Ecuadorians, and two from Peru. A breakdown showed there was 67 single adult males, 28 single adult females, and 12 family unit migrants.
Three hours later, at 10:30 a.m., 122 undocumented migrants were apprehended after illegally entering the United States. The group of 122 migrants was made up of 60 Cuban nationals, 19 Venezuelans, 38 Colombians, two Peruvians, two Nicaraguans, and one Dominican. A demographics of the group showed there were 61 single adult males, 27 single adult females, 33 family unit migrants, and one unaccompanied child.
Later that afternoon, at 5:45 p.m., another group of 147 undocumented migrants were encountered after making illegal entry into the United States. The group of 147 migrants consisted of 22 Cuban nationals, 21 Venezuelan nationals, 52 Colombians, 28 from Peru, 23 from Nicaragua, and one Honduran. Among the group, there were 90 single adult males, 21 single adult females, and 36 family unit migrants.
All individuals were transported to the Eagle Pass Centralized Processing Center and processed in accordance with Customs and Border Protection policies.
Del Rio Sector continues to see an increase in migrant encounters, smuggling events and sex offender apprehensions. During the current fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1, 2021, through March 31, Del Rio Sector agents have encountered 195,289 migrants.
