HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, Atlantic County, NJ – A 49-year-old Hammonton man is in the hospital recovering from critical injuries after being struck by a car Thursday morning.

The crash happened at around 7:10 am when officers with the Township of Hamilton Police Department responded to a pedestrian motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 40 and Cantillion Boulevard.

“The initial investigation revealed a 2009 Chevy Cobalt driven by Andrew Vitale, 32, of Port Norris, was traveling west on Route 40 when his vehicle struck Michael Peterson, 49, of Hammonton,” the Atlantic City Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement later in the day. “Mr. Peterson was walking north on Cantillion Boulevard attempting to cross Route 40, against the traffic signal.”

Mr. Peterson was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Mr. Vitale, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not injured.
