NEWARK, NJ – Police in Newark were able to stop an armed robbery in progress near the corner of Hobson Street and Bragaw Avenue on Tuesday.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara today announced the arrest of Shaquan M. Burr, 22, and Tajir Branch, 22, both of Newark.

“I commend the detectives for spotting a crime as it was occurring and immediately taking the appropriate actions to safely apprehend these individuals,” Director O’Hara said. “Because each suspect was armed, this incident could have quickly resulted in violence. So far this year, Newark Police have recovered 280 illegal weapons, reflecting a 50 percent increase over the same period on 2021,” he added.

According to a police report, just before 8:30 p.m., detectives observed a male lying on the ground and being assaulted with a handgun by a male suspect while a second suspect was removing the victim’s shoes.

“Upon becoming aware of police presence, both suspects ran, with Burr tossing a handgun and a vest he was wearing onto the street. He was quickly apprehended. Police recovered the .9MM handgun, which was loaded,” the report states.

Branch was arrested at the scene and was also found in possession of a loaded handgun.

Burr and Branch each face charges of conspiracy, robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
