PARSIPPANY, NJ – A vigilant parent at Northvail Elementary School in Parsipanny sounded the alarm after noticing a gun being carried by a woman on school property. That alert triggered a police response and a school lockdown.

The Parsippany Police Department said in a statement that it received a report of an armed person outside of Northvail Elementary School.

“An immediate and full scale response was initiated to the school based on this information. It was quickly determined that an off-duty officer from another jurisdiction was in civilian clothing and accidentally exposed her concealed handgun as she exited her vehicle,” police said.

“We thank the alert parent who saw this and immediately reported it. We encourage everyone to report any, and all suspicious activity immediately,” the department added.
