MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan claimed that Jesus would have “wanted nothing to with” AR-15 rifles on his show Sunday evening.
“I’m not a Christian, but I’m a fan of Jesus and I’m pretty sure that Jesus wanted to have nothing to do with nationalism or AR-15s for that matter,” Hasan, who is Muslim, said after he played a clip of comments by Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
Greene claimed on her streaming show last week that “Christian nationalism” would stop mass shootings at schools and restore the United States, Newsweek reported. Greene also claimed that liberal media outlets would label Christian nationalism as “domestic terrorism.”
“It’s not the radical left shooting up supermarkets and synagogues, it’s far-right supremacists peddling the same great replacement theory that Republicans like Greene do,” Hasan told fellow MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin.
Hasan called for Democrats to “get tough” with “gun pushers” earlier in his show to address what he called a “gun violence epidemic.” The remarks came in the aftermath of mass shootings in Uvalde, Buffalo and Tulsa.
“What common ground do you expect us to find?” Hasan asked. “Democrats need to get tougher on Republicans, on gun pushers.”
Hasan urged Democrats to “forget civility and bipartisanship when kids are lying dead on a classroom floor.”
Rifles of all types were used in 302 homicides in 2020, according to statistics on the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer. By comparison, knives were used in 877 homicides that year, the FBI data said.
Greene and MSNBC did not respond to requests for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.
