SOUTH RIVER, NJ – The report of a knife on a student inside the South River Middle School was unfounded, police said Wednesday.

According to police, on Wednesday, at approximately 2:00 PM, South River Police Department personnel responded to the South River Middle School for a report of a student in possession of a knife.

“The alleged knife was reported to be seen in the student’s school bag; however, at no point was it reported to be used to threaten any students or staff. Upon receiving this report, school staff notified our department and immediately initiated shelter-in-place protocols at the elementary and middle school,” police reported. “In conjunction with school administration, security cameras were reviewed and the school was searched. It was determined the student had no weapon, and there was no threat to school students and staff. The shelter in place was subsequently lifted after approximately 24 minutes. Out of an abundance of caution, an additional police presence was maintained in the area during dismissal.”
