Mo Hill Republicans Were Election Day Losers in Toms River’s County Committee Primary

TOMS RIVER, NJ – By the numbers, Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill’s Republican Club failed to gain the majority of seats on the important Toms River Township Republican Municipal Committee after losing 17 out of 28 challenges by the town’s historic Regular Republican Club.

The defeat for Team Hill on election day doesn’t bode well for Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, who now sees himself with a major vote deficit in his hometown of Toms River.

Hill formed his new Republicans for Toms River Club after several unsuccessful attempts to seize control of the club were defeated by party rank and file members.

The traditional Toms River Republican Club saw Ocean County Freeholder candidate Sergio Fossa and his wife Tamara Fossa defeat Hill club candidates Yakov Birnbaum and Yakov pearl in the sixth district.

Toms River Councilmember Matt Lotano and his wife Melissa Lotano, both staunch Hill club candidates, defeated the regular Republican club opponents in District 9.

Toms River School Board Member Lisa Contessa and her husband Toms defeated the Hill team in District 17.

Beth McGuckin, the ex-wife of Hill heavyweight Assemblyman Greg McGuckin, who now works at the Ocean County election board, was defeated by Lisa Fiore and John Loiacano in District 19.

Lynn O’Toole and Jeff Dingsor, representing the traditional Republican club, shellacked Mo Hill candidates Pat Mackin and Donna Skiatrito by a nearly 2-1 margin in District 21.

Toms River Regular Republican Club President Jerry Ambrosio defeated her Mo Hill-aligned opponent Vivian Vosbring in District 28.

After getting voted off the Toms River Township council in 2021, Maria Maruca received a consolation prize, narrowly defeating Kimberly Troisi 49-41 in District 29.

Mo Hill diehards Janet Mutter, Robert Maruca, Tracie Fornier, Philip Briliant, Jason Crispin, Tom Kunz, and the Wallmans were all soundly defeated by the Regular Republican candidates.

Mo Hill’s Republican Club won big in District 58 where Baruch Birnabaum and Avrobom Fiohr defeated the Regular Republican Club candidates by a 3 to 1 margin in North Dover.

The election results don’t bode well for Sheriff Michael Mastonardy, who is now down 34-18 votes in his upcoming chairman’s election in Toms River. Mastronardy will face off against former Ocean County Chairman George Gilmore to see who will become the Ocean County Republican Party’s next chairman in July.
