NEWARK, NJ – Gun arrests are up 47% across Newark in 2022 over the same period last year, according to the Newark Police Department. This week, two more illegal gun possession charges were filed against a pair of Jersey City men.

Interim Newark Public Safety Director Raul Malave said police have arrested Tony Andrade, 40, and Norman Montalvo, 41, both of Jersey City, in connection with an aggravated assault that occurred on June 19, 2022.

“The work that our detectives are doing to reduce gun violence is simply outstanding,” Interim Director Malave said. “Three guns were seized as part of this investigation, bringing the total number of guns recovered so far this year to 450, reflecting a 35 percent increase over the same period a year ago. Our officers are also showing a 47 percent increase in firearms-related arrests year-to-date,” he added. “This data is proof-positive that our officers are working hard to keep Newark safe from violent offenders.”

According to a police report, at approximately 5 a.m., police responded to a building at Livingston Street near Springfield Avenue on a ShotSpotter notification. No one has been reported as injured, but Police recovered 16 spent shell casings, three loaded handguns, various alcohol beverages, multiple hookahs, an ATM machine, DJ equipment, and TVs at the scene.

Detectives investigating this incident identified Andrade and Montalvo as suspects and obtained a warrant for each man’s arrest. Andrade was arrested on July 7, 2022 in Jersey City, and Montalvo was arrested on July 11, 2022 in Newark.
