PSA: Syracuse Police Warn of 122% Increase in Burglaries

Public Safety Announcement

PSA By Syracuse PD

SYRACUSE, NY – Burglaries are up 122% in the Southeast District compared to this time last year. Many of these crimes occur in and around the university area neighborhoods. A majority of these burglaries involve unlocked dwellings and vehicles. It is more important than ever to make sure we are protecting ourselves by locking our doors and windows and the vehicles in our driveways. Adequate lighting and cameras are also important.

From August 10, 2022, to August 30, 2022, there have been a total of 39 burglaries, 34 of which were occupied, and 11 burglaries with vehicles stolen. This has mainly been in the Syracuse University & Lemoyne College areas. Incidents primarily occur during the early morning hours (1-6 A.M.) and involve no-force entries. The theft of small electronics, wallets/handbags, keys, and vehicles is common.
It is unknown if and how these incidents are related.

We are working with the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety in these efforts and patrolling these neighborhoods. We currently have a proactive detail in this area in efforts to reduce crime.
We need your help. If you notice something out of place, a suspicious person or vehicle, call 911 and notify the police. Thank you
