UTICA, NY – The Utica Police Department is investigating after a 17-year-old male rolled up behind two victims while riding his bicycle and began firing multiple shots from his 9mm handgun.
According to police, on Tuesday at approximately 6:10 PM, Utica Police units were dispatched to the 900 block of Saratoga St regarding a shots fired investigation.
“Upon arrival the units located several spent shell casings and a live 9mm round in the roadway,” the Utica Police Department said. “In developing the facts of the incident it was learned that a male had ridden a bicycle northbound on Saratoga St and began firing numerous rounds at two individuals who were walking ahead of him near Court St. Following this, the male then fled on the bicycle. Thankfully no one was struck during this exchange.”
The following statement regarding the arrest and investigation:
A description of the male and bicycle was distributed department-wide, and information was developed about the possible route of flight of the suspect.
In viewing additional surveillance camera footage from a location on that route, officers were able to make an identification of the male.
On September 8th, 2022 an officer with the Patrol Division noticed the suspect walking and conducted a stop of the party. He was detained without incident and transported to the Utica Police Department.
An investigator with the Juvenile Aid Division charged the 17-year-old male, whose name was not released, with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree and Reckless Endangerment in the first degree.
