A University of Chicago student group is hosting an event to talk about race, open exclusively to students of color, according to the event description.

UChicago United, a group of “students of color committed to racial justice,” is putting on several events as a part of their “Dis-Orientation Series” for students to learn about “what UChicago doesn’t want you to know,” according to the eventdescription. On Oct. 5, the group is hosting “Race @ UChicago” which is listed as open to only those who are “Black, Indigenous and people of color.”

The event is open to alumni of the university as well as current students so they may have a “honest discussion of navigating race at UChicago,” the event description reads. Students are required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status, the group says, because “the pandemic is not over. We keep us safe.”

Other events in the series include a “Walking DE-Tour of UChicago Campus” for students to get their “bearings and uncover histories of injustice and resistance that are hidden all around campus,” an event description read. The “Policing, Gentrification and Abolition” event is planned for Oct. 4 and is a workshop on “the history of UChicago’s gentrification and policing, and an introduction to abolition.”

The “Dis-Orientation Series” ends on Oct. 7 with an “Activist Open House” where representatives from activist groups involved in “survivor, migrant, labor, racial, environmental and disability justice” will come together and educate studentson how they can get involved, the event description stated.

UChicago United was created in 2017 with the goal of “structurally transforming the University of Chicago’s campus into a truly inclusive space that fits the needs of and empowers students of color,” the group website stated. The group has a campaign called “Care Not Cops” to advocate for abolishing police presence on campus.

UChicago United and the University of Chicago did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
