PATERSON, NJ – The Paterson Police Department, while investigating a rash of carjackings in the city, shot and killed a suspected carjacker.

At around 5 pm on Monday, police followed the suspect while on patrol, investigating carjackings in the neighborhood, when they spotted a suspect wanted in one of the carjackings.

At some point, police opened fire on the suspect, killing him on Van Houten Street between Auburn and Straight Streets.

According to witnesses, the police officers approached the suspect as he was engaged in a criminal act, possibly another carjacking attempt.

It is not sure what events transpired that led up to the shooting. The suspect was pronounced dead. He was not identified by police.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is now taking over the investigation.
