BAYSHORE, NY – it was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but gunshots rang out at a baby shower held at a home in Bayshore when a 16-year-old pulled out a gun and shot the baby’s great-uncle.

During the baby shower being held in the backyard of the home, a fight broke out in the front yard. Family members rushed in the backyard to the front to see what was happening and to assist in helping a family member who was engaged in the altercation.

The fight was eventually broken up.

Please said about two minutes later, Javier Soto returned to the front yard with a gun, I’m at close range pointed at the expectant mother’s uncle, and fired two shots at him.

“A baby shower should be a joyous occasion celebrating the coming of new life. Here, the defendant allegedly risked lives and shot a party guest with an illegal firearm,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “Fortunately, there were no fatalities. However, someone was seriously hurt and now the defendant will face justice for his alleged senseless act.”

The man was struck in the leg and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. The injury to his leg was described as serious by police investigators at the scene.

Soto was arrested for assault and criminal weapons possession charges. He remains in jail awaiting trial without bail at this time.
