Newark officials team up with Red Cross to install free smoke detectors to city residents

NEWARK, NJ -Newark residents without smoke detectors in their homes were given free units that were installed by firefighters and and other officials in their homes this weekend.

“The Newark Fire Division, in partnership with the American Red Cross, installed free smoke detectors at residences in the South Ward on Saturday, October 15, 2022,” the Newark Fire Department said.

Fire Chief Rufus Jackson said 216 smoke detectors were installed and 127 homes that did not need new smoke detectors received fire prevention through tips.

The initiative was a coordinated effort between the American Red Cross, Newark Firefighters, and other partners, including Vulcan Pioneers, Starbucks, Muslim Americans Veterans Association, Newark Bronze Shields, Wawa, Newark City Council Member At-Large Loiuse Scott-Rountree, South Ward Council Member Patrick Council, John Sharpe James, and Director of Newark’s Office of Emergency Management.
