CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny attacked Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel Monday, claiming that Republican rhetoric about the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election was a cause of the Friday attack on Paul Pelosi.

“It’s — it’s beyond the pale in every respect. Like, let’s not even talk about it anymore. It’s just — it’s vile. This has been building for a very long time. So the chair of the RNC to say, you know, fire Pelosi, that’s not what this is about,” Jeff Zeleny told “Inside Politics” host John King. “As you said, this is about election denialism. What has happened over the last two years has seeped into the minds and the thoughts of some unstable people, which there always have been.”

“But the difference of this now, candidates for public office for secretary of state, who govern elections, and people who want to be our leaders are now saying this,” Zeleny continued. “It has suddenly become a mainstream thought to deny the election.”

David DePape attacked Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer, demanding to know where Speaker Pelosi was. DePape’s ex-girlfriend told the San Francisco Chronicle that DePape had a history of mental illness and drug use.

“I think you raise a good point, Heather, about governing. This election is almost over,” Zeleny said. “And the reality is, as we’ll talk about through the show, the House of Representatives, Republicans are in a very strong position to regain control of the House. History would suggest that will happen. The math would basically suggest it happens. If it does happen, what does this mean for government?”

Former President Donald Trump called the attack on Mr. Pelosi “a terrible thing” in an interview with Americano Media, while Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate Minority Leader, said the attack “horrified and disgusted” him.
