‘We’ve Seen This Before’: CNN Guest Compares GOP, Ballot Box Watchers To KKK

A former Washington, D.C., police officer compared the Republican Party and ballot box watchers to the “Ku Klux Klan” during a Thursday CNN appearance.

“I mean, going back to the beginning point, what I’ve seen as far as, you know, the Republican Party’s playbook is the – they’ve become the win at all costs party,” Michael Fanone, who was one of the police officers at the Capitol building during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021, told guest host Brianna Keilar. “They’re no longer interested in winning through the democratic process, they’re willing to subvert the democratic process to win by suppressing the votes, by denying the legitimacy of elections, whatever it takes at this point. And to me, as an American, somebody who cares about democracy, that is incredibly scary.”

“We’ve seen this before in our history, after the civil war, during reconstruction in the early 1900s, you had the Ku Klux Klan scaring people from going to the ballot box,” Fanone continued. “Now you have masked militia members, individuals who are armed, sitting in lawn chairs, wearing masks, terrorizing people from going and casting a ballot.”

Fanone referenced drop-box watchers in Arizona in an op-ed published Thursday on CNN.com, decrying what he claimed was “indifference” to “wolves at the doorstep.”

United States District Judge Michael T. Liburdi declined to issue an injunction against Clean Elections USA, “a grassroots organization committed to election integrity,” and its founder Melody Jennings after the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans accused the group of engaging in voter intimidation.

Fanone, who has been a vociferous critic of Republicans, called GOP gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake of Arizona a “piece of shit” during a Wednesday appearance on MSNBC,

“We need to, you know, start looking to, you know, our neighbors and looking at our greater communities, rather than caring only about ourselves and our own careers and livelihoods,” Fanone said.

The Republican National Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
