‘I Don’t Really Know What That Was’: Bakari Sellers Rips Kimmel Ad Against Laxalt

Harold Hutchison on November 4, 2022

Bakari Sellers ripped an ad with Jimmy Kimmel that targeted Republican senatorial nominee Adam Laxalt of Nevada during a Friday appearance on CNN.

“I don’t really know what that was, to be completely honest with you,” Sellers, a former Democratic representative in South Carolina, told “The Lead” guest-host John Berman. “I don’t know what the messaging was. I don’t know the reasoning behind it. I don’t know the timing of it. I don’t know who asked for that. And if they asked for it, they probably need to be fired.”

Kimmel’s ad compared Laxalt, a former attorney general of Nevada, to a “creepy cousin” and attacked his support for Republican Secretary of State nominee Jim Marchant of Nevada, who Kimmel claimed was tied to people who believe former President John F. Kennedy is still alive. Marchant claimed irregularities occurred in the 2020 election, CNN reported.

Kimmel’s ad came as polls show Laxalt ahead of incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada.

Laxalt led Cortez Masto by 5% in polls by The Hill/Emerson and Susquehanna, while a Trafalgar poll noted Laxalt had a 4% lead.

“I love Jimmy Kimmel. I love the fact that people are speaking up and speaking their minds,” Sellers continued. “I’m never somebody who says shut up and stay in your place, but be on message and have a message. I think going back to what [CNN hosts] S.E. [Cupp] and Abby [Phillip] were saying, Democrats don’t have a message to combat crime other than the fact that, yes, Republicans are being dishonest about it.”

A Trafalgar poll from September noted that 67.9% of respondents felt less safe than they did two years ago, as New York City and Philadelphia saw crime rates increase from 2021, a year in which six major cities reported record-high levels of violent crime. Only 37% of respondents approved of President Joe Biden’s handling of crime in a Fox News poll, while his handling of crime garnered 39% approval in Economist/YouGov and Harvard/Harris polls and dropped to 33% in a Monmouth poll.

Laxalt has campaigned on crime, and denounced a “far-left movement towards decriminalization under the guise of social justice,” declaring that “law and order is not negotiable” on his campaign site.

“Yes, crime rates are higher in states like Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and Georgia which are all run by Republicans than they are in places like New York City,” Sellers added. “But you actually cannot be dismissive. And I think even ads by Jimmy Kimmel come off as being dismissive. We have to talk to voters about their concerns.”
