Sunny Hostin Claims Republicans Want To Raise The Voting Age To 28

Harold Hutchison on November 14, 2022

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” claimed Monday Republicans wanted to raise the voting age to 28 after the 2022 midterms, citing youth voter turnout.

“When you look at the youth voter turnout in the 2022 midterms, they delivered key wins for the Democrats,” Hostin said. “Younger voters aged 18 to 29, which by the way, now the Republicans want to raise the voting to age 28. Younger voters were the only voter group by age to overwhelmingly support Democrats in the midterms. 63% of voters voted for democratic house candidates.”

It is unclear who Hostin was referencing in the segment. Peter Schiff, a “conservative radio personality,” noted in a Nov. 8 tweet that the voting age should be raised to 28, the Daily Beast reported.

Democrats received 63% of the youth vote, ages 18-29, according to a CNN exit poll updated Nov. 9. Abortion was the top issue for the youth cohort, along with gun control and crime, according to the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University (CIRCLE).

CIRCLE also noted that the 2022 midterms saw the highest number of youth voter turnout within the last 30 years.

WATCH:

Republicans underperformed expectations in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, despite high inflation numbers and rising concerns about crime, barely taking control of the House of Representatives and losing the seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania to Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. Former NFL running back and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker faces Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia in a Dec. 6 runoff to determine if the Senate remains split at 50-50, or if Democrats take a 51-49 edge.

Republican Senate nominees Blake Masters of Arizona and Adam Laxalt of Nevada narrowly lost Senate races after several days of vote counting, according to The New York Times.

It is unclear if Hostin was joking when she made the comment. The audience did not laugh after her comment.

The 26th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1971, lowered the voting age to 18 from 21.

“The Republican Party has to get with it. They are dying out,” Hostin said.
