SILVER SPRING, MD – Three teens were arrested after an attempted carjacking of a male victim carrying groceries to his car in the parking lot of Safeway in the downtown Central Business District on Monday.

Two juveniles and an 18-year-old were arrested and charged by police.

According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, officers working the downtown Central Business District area observed three males looking into vehicles in the Whole Foods parking lot.

“The group then walked towards the Safeway parking lot in the 900 block of Thayer Ave. The suspects observed the victim come out of Safeway with groceries and walk to his vehicle,” the department said. “As the victim was loading the groceries into his 2018 Audi Q7, the three suspects rushed him. All three suspects punched, kicked, and demanded the victim give up his car keys.”

A witness who observed the assault began honking their horn as the victim refused to surrender his keys. The suspects fled towards the Silver Spring Metro, where patrol officers and a K9 were able to arrest the group following a brief foot chase. An BB gun was discovered during the arrest of all three suspects.
