A man from North Carolina with a long criminal history was arrested Monday in connection with a rape and sexual assault committed more than four decades ago in Maryland.

In April 1981, Marion Pearson Jr., 65, was accused of raping a woman in Durham, North Carolina, falsely imprisoning her, committing robbery, and assaulting her, as well as attempted first-degree rape, false imprisonment and assault for allegedly sexually assaulting another woman in Silver Spring, Maryland, in June.

Montgomery County cold case detectives and forensic specialists submitted the DNA evidence from the first incident to the Combined DNA Index System in this year, and the second incident had a similar suspect description and pattern, according to police.

Pearson was released from North Carolina prison in 2020 after serving 22 years for multiple first-degree rapes, the press release said. He previously lived in Maryland’s Prince George’s County and was arrested several times between 1980 and 1999 for assault, indecent exposure and peeping-tom.

Durham County Sheriff’s Department coordinated for Pearson’s Monday arrest, and he is awaiting extradition to Maryland, according to the press release.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
