Jewish leaders and advocacy groups have distanced themselves from former President Donald Trump after condemning his choice to host a dinner for Kanye West, who brought along Nick Fuentes to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), American Jewish Congress (AJC) and Jewish leaders have voiced their opinions on Trump meeting with West and Fuentes, with an AJC spokesperson telling the Daily Caller News Foundation that it represents an “inflection point” in mainstreaming anti-Semitic beliefs in America. The groups and leaders fear that antisemitism and neo-Nazism are becoming acceptable, saying that the move paints Trump, wether he was aware of the meeting or not, in a bad light.

“Former President Donald Trump’s decision to dine at Mar-a-Lago with renowned antisemite Kanye West and white supremacist leader Nick Fuentes represents an inflection point, a new low in the mainstreaming of American antisemitism. It is a chilling moment for the American Jewish community and a slap in the face of all Americans,” a spokesperson for the AJC told the DCNF. “This has had real world consequences.”

Morton Klein, the head of ZOA and who’s parents are Holocaust survivors, said he has become very frightened for Jewish people, according to the New York Times. “Donald Trump is not an antisemite. He loves Israel. He loves Jews. But he mainstreams, he legitimizes Jew hatred and Jew haters. And this scares me.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Trump for meeting with West and Fuentes, but did say that he hoped it was a mistake because Trump has been a supporter of Israel.

“I think it’s a mistake. He shouldn’t do that. He has been a tremendous supporter of Israel, and I’m unabashedly appreciative of what he did for Israel,” Netanyahu said. “He’s been very supportive of the Jewish people. So I think he made a mistake. I hope it’s not repeated.”

Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism Rabbi Jonah Pesner rebuked the dinner saying, “We forcefully condemn the meeting between Former President Trump, Ye & Fuentes who is a reprehensible antisemite and white supremacist. We call on people of all faiths & political affiliations to join in unequivocal condemnation. Hate can’t be normalized.”

Former adviser to President George W. Bush and previous supporter of Trump, Jay Lefkowitz, says that Trump has gone too far, according to the NYT.“We have a long history in this country of separating the moral character of the man in the White House from his conduct in office, but with Trump, it’s gone beyond any of the reasonably acceptable and justifiable norms,” Lefkowitz said.

We forcefully condemn the meeting between Former President Trump, Ye & Fuentes who is a reprehensible antisemite and white supremacist. We call on people of all faiths & political affiliations to join in unequivocal condemnation. Hate can’t be normalized.

“If there is anything we can learn from the political mainstreaming of antisemitism, it is that silence and inaction have only made antisemitism stronger and more acceptable. This must change,” the AJC spokesperson continued.

Alongside Jewish groups and leaders, political figures have spoken against the former president’s move to dine with West and Fuentes. California Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney and former Vice President Mike Pence all voiced their opinion on the move.

“I think it’s been clear that there’s no bottom to the degree to which President Trump will degrade himself and the nation,” Romney said, according to CBS Reporter Alan He.

“I condemn his ideology. It has no place in society. At all. Look, the president can have meetings with who he wants. I don’t think anybody though should have a meeting with Nick Fuentes and his views are nowhere within the Republican Party or within this country itself. I don’t think he should associate with [Kanye] as well,” McCarthy said during a press brief.

“Let me just say that there is no room in the Republican Party for antisemitism or white supremacy. And anyone meeting people advocating that point of view, in my judgment, are highly unlikely to ever be elected President of the United States,” McConnell said during a press conference, according to PBS.

Trump did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
