YONKERS, NY – The city of Yonkers is mourning the loss of a 24-year veteran police officer who was killed last night in a serious crash on Tuckahoe Road.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it has been determined that the Sergeant, who was driving an unmarked police vehicle on duty, was traveling westbound on Tuckahoe Road when a BMW sedan traveling eastbound lost control and crossed into the opposite lane, striking both the Sergeant’s vehicle and a bus operated by Westchester County.

He was the sole occupant of the police vehicle and was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“It is with profound sadness that the Yonkers Police Department reports that a 24-year veteran of this Department was killed today in a multi-vehicle accident that occurred on Tuckahoe Road at the Sprain Brook Parkway overpass,” the Yonkers Police Department said in a statement shortly after the fatal crash.

The driver of the BMW, who was also the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition. The driver of the bus sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and several of the approximately thirty passengers received minor injuries at the scene.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m.

“We’re all feeling the loss today. Police officers are feeling the loss, and the community is. Our condolences go out to the family of this officer.” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. “It goes out to the Yonkers family of the young man who was also part of this accident, in critical condition as well. It’s a real tragic night all around.”

The accident remains under investigation by the Yonkers Police Department and Westchester County Department of Public Safety.

ABC 7’s Eyewitness news reported the incident last night.
