New LA Mayor Announces Homelessness State Of Emergency

Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared at her Sunday inauguration that she would institute a homelessness state of emergency and create an Office of Community Safety.

Vice President Kamala Harris swore Bass into office Sunday. Bass announced in her inauguration speech that she would “declare a state of emergency on homelessness” the next day and argued that authorities must stop in-progress crimes and uphold accountability, according to LA CityView35’s livestream.

“Some neighborhoods have asked for additional officers, but what neighborhoods are asking for and what they need for safety is as diverse as our city is,” she said. “That’s why my administration will launch an Office of Community Safety so that we meet with neighbors, store clerks, dog walkers, teenagers who know what’s actually going on behind the statistics. We want to have block by block information on how to truly keep each neighborhood safe – is it more officers, better lighting, cleaner streets, a closed alley that you need?”

An estimated 69,114 homeless people were living in Los Angeles County in February, roughly 4.1% more than in 2020, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s 2022 Homeless Count. The city’s year-to-date violent crime increased by about 1.9% by Dec. 3 compared to last year and roughly 9.3% over 202o, police statistics show.

I had the privilege of swearing in Karen Bass as mayor of Los Angeles. I’ve seen her commitment to public service up close in Congress, and I know she will serve the people of this great city with honor. Congratulations, Mayor Bass. pic.twitter.com/mgrONndfI7

One of Bass’ daughters was reportedly victimized in a Dec. 1 hit-and-run incident in Los Angeles. Bass was representing California’s 37th Congressional District when she defeated real estate developer and former Republican Rick Caruso in the November mayoral election.
