DUNKIRK, MD – A Calvert County deputy was shot as police exchanged fire with a suspect in Dunkirk after a high-speed pursuit on Saturday.

The incident began after Calvert County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop in Dunkirk on Saturday at around 9:30 p.m.

“During the initial stop, the suspect vehicle fled from deputies at a high rate southbound on Rt. 4,” the department said today.

According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect driving the fleeing vehicle fired at pursuing deputies, hitting one patrol vehicle in the process.

The pursuit continued to the Walnut Creek subdivision in Huntingtown, where deputies used a Pit Maneuver to terminate the pursuit. The occupants fled on foot. After firing additional rounds, the suspect struck a deputy in the nearby development. Deputies returned fire, and the suspect fled into the nearby subdivision. The passenger was immediately taken into custody.

Deputies were able to arrest the suspect near the entryway to the neighborhood a short time later. The suspect was also shot, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Both the suspect and deputy were transported to area trauma centers for injuries received. The suspect remains in stable condition. As of the time of this press release, the deputy is in critical condition. In accordance with agency policy, two additional deputies involved in gunfire have been placed on administrative leave.

The identities of the officer and suspect were not released by police this morning. The deputy was listed in critical condition Saturday night at an area hospital.

Route 4 southbound was shutdown until early Sunday morning.
