LEWES, DE – Three people are dead and the driver who caused the serious crash in Lewes on Christmas Eve fled the scene.

Delaware State Police are investigating the crash that took place at approximately 7:59 p.m. on Christmas Eve when an unknown subject was operating a 2016 Land Rover on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9) approaching Minos Conaway Road.

At that time, an automobile operated by a 42-year-old man from Temple, PA was stopped at the intersection of Lewes-Georgetown Highway on Minos Conaway Road for a stop sign.

“After pulling into the path of the Land Rover, the Honda attempted to turn left. As a result, the Land Rover front struck the Honda’s driver’s side for impact in the westbound lane,” DSP said. “The Land Rover continued westbound as it rotated counterclockwise, where it came to rest in the westbound lane after impact. When the Honda hit, it spun counterclockwise and came to rest in the eastbound lane.”

He was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

Six other occupants of the Honda were ejected during the collision, including the 42-year-old male driver.

All three fatal victims were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, including a 35-year-old female from Temple, PA, a 9-year-old female from Temple, PA, and a 74-year-old male from Lewes, DE.

The victims’ identities are pending notification to their families.

All three passengers, a 12-year-old male, a 4-year-old male, and a 67-year-old female, were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The operator of the Land Rover fled from the collision scene on foot and has not been identified at this time.

Lewes-Georgetown Highway at Minos Conaway Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway cleared.
