PRINCETON, NJ – A Princeton police officer on patrol Saturday afternoon in the area of 73 Palmer Square West noticed what he believed to be a sharp object on the ground and investigated.

The location is a popular shopping and hangout destination just outside the Princeton University campus.

As the officer approached the location reported by a caller, he was zapped by an unknown electrical current, the department said.

He was taken to the Center for Emergency Care at Princeton Medical Center for treatment. He was released without incident from the hospital.

PSE&G crews investigating the matter traced the electrical current back to a nearby malfunctioning light pole owned by the company. Power was shut and the equipment is being repaired.
