In the aftermath of the death of famed journalist Barbara Walters, a rare and obscure video interview she did in 2012 with Chris Christie is now going viral.
In that interview, while Christie was seeking to become the next president of the United States, Walters asked the former New Jersey governor why he was fat.
Barbara Walters, one of the most visible women on U.S. television as the first female anchor on an American network evening news broadcast and one of TV’s most prominent interviewers, died on Friday at age 93.
Walters, who created the popular ABC women’s talk show “The View” in 1997, died at her home in New York, Robert Iger, chief executive of ABC’s corporate parent, The Walt Disney Co. , said in a statement. The circumstances of her death were not given.
“I’m sitting opposite you, and you are a little overweight,” she asked the former New Jersey Governor. “Why?”
“If I could figure that out, I would fix it,” Christie said. “I have more diets and lost and gained back more weight in my lifetime than I can count.”
When asked if his weight would keep him out of the office, the portly former governor responded, “That’s ridiculous.”
Many commenters on Twitter jumped on Christie over his weight, his low approval ratings as governor, and his ties to former U.S. President Donald J. Trump. Others said Walters engaged in public fat-shaming and criticized the now-deceased journalist.
