Police investigating Midtown anti-Asian hate crime, assault

It was reported to police that on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at approximately 1515 hours, at the northwest corner of the Avenue of the Americas and West 33 Street, a 56-year-old female victim was approached from behind by an unknown individual.

NEW YORK, NY – A 56-year-old Asian woman was attacked by an unknown male suspect on New Year’s Eve in Midtown Manhattan. Today, the NYPD released photos of the alleged suspect, now wanted for a hate crime.

At around 3:15 pm, the male suspect approached the Asian woman at the corner of Avenue of the Americas and West 33rd Street.

“Without any prior conversation or provocation, the unknown individual forcibly pushed the victim to the ground, then made an anti-Asian statement before fleeing in an unknown direction, to parts unknown,” the NYPD said in a statement today.


The victim sustained a minor injury to her arm but refused medical attention; the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is investigating.

Police described the suspect as an adult male with, light complexion, approximately 5’6″ tall, weighing 155 lbs., large build, with short dark hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on the back, camouflaged sweatpants, black pants, and black sneakers.
