DSP provides update on William Penn school shooting

NEW CASTLE, DE – The Delaware State Police have confirmed a gunshot was fired inside William Penn High School after previously reporting ‘a report of a gunshot’ within the building.

Today, police confirmed they found evidence that a bullet struck the interior of a bathroom within the school.


On Tuesday, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the School Resource Officer at the William Penn High School located at 713 East Basin Road, New Castle, was alerted of a potential gunshot inside of a second-floor bathroom at the school.

“The School Resource Officer responded to the location and observed signs that a round struck the interior of the bathroom. There were no injuries reported,” DSP said today. “Further investigation revealed a suspect ran from the rear of the school towards the football stadium. A search of the area led to the discovery of a Glock handgun. This remains an active investigation. The number of suspects and their involvement is still being determined.”

The school will remain closed for the week as the investigation continues.
