College Offering New Course On Israel’s ‘Crime Of Apartheid’

Kate Anderson on February 2, 2023

A new class starting at a private New York college this week named “Apartheid in Israel-Palestine” will be taught by Professor Nathan Hall, former director of the Arab-Israeli Project at the International Crisis Group (ICG), and teach students about the “crime of apartheid,” according to the class description.

Thrall, who is based in Jerusalem, worked at the ICG, which describes itself as an “independent organization” that seeks to create policies to avoid war and promote peace, and who also wrote the book “The Only Language They Understand: Forcing Compromise in Israel and Palestine,” which was reviewed by Elliott Abrams, former deputy national security advisor to George W. Bush, as “the toughest criticisms anywhere of decades of Israeli policy.” The class started Tuesday, exploring the reasons behind “international, Palestinian, and Israeli human rights organizations” and claiming that “Israeli officials are committing the crime of apartheid.”

“This course will examine Israel-Palestine and the crime of apartheid,” the class description read. “Why have leading international, Palestinian, and Israeli human rights organizations found that Israeli officials are committing the crime of apartheid? Through close scrutiny of recent reports on Israeli apartheid by leading human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, al-Haq, and B’Tselem, as well as criticisms of those reports, students will survey the central issues concerning apartheid in Israel-Palestine.”

The class description was posted on Twitter by Omar Shakir, the Israel and Palestine director of the Human Rights Watch, who has been supportive of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement that aims to “intensify global pressure to dismantle Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism and apartheid.”

Omar called Thrall’s class an “incredible opportunity,” according to the post.

The class, listed as a “Human Rights” course, will reportedly bring in guest lecturers from “leading” organizations familiar with the conflict to speak about the issue, according to the description. Additionally, Thrall will have students discuss and determine what the “political, analytical, and legal implications of this finding” could look like.

Bard and Thrall did not immediately reply to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
