NYC man shot girlfriend, killed himself inside Utica deli

UTICA, NY – A Bronx man shot and killed himself in what appears to be a botched murder suicide attempt inside a Utica deli on Thursday.

Police responded to the Dari Del at the corner of Noyes Street and York Street at around 1:30 PM after receiving a report of a female gunshot victim inside.

Police believed the woman was shot in the torso and the gunman was still inside the deli. Although police were told the gunman shot and killed himself, officers proceeded with caution.


“The female victim was immediately transported by the Utica Fire Department to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. It was learned there that she required immediate emergency surgery due to her injuries,” police said. “With the potential that the male was still inside the store armed with a handgun, a perimeter was established and the immediate area cordoned off. METRO SWAT officers from The Utica Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, and New Hartford Police Department arrived on scene and took over scene security.”

Police utilized a robotic vehicle was requested from the Herkimer Police Department and activated the Metro SWAT team.

“The Herkimer Police Department then worked in conjunction with a drone and the robot to enter the establishment. Upon surveilling the inside the store, they located the male in the rear of the business,” UPD said today. “The male was on the ground unresponsive, and as the officers and UFD personnel made entry they located the suspect. It was immediately evident that he was deceased of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The male is identified as Jakwon Ramos age 27 of the Bronx.

The investigation has been assigned to the Utica Police Department Major Crimes Unit. Part of this investigation will to be determine the nexus of events leading up to the shooting and potential motive behind it.

During the police investigation, two Utica schools were placed on a ‘lock out’ status due to this occurring in the immediate vicinity of both.
