Buffalo teen pleads guilty to shooting security officer at McKinley High School

BUFFALO, NY – A teenage suspect has pleaded guilty to shooting at a school security officer during an incident a year ago at McKinley High School.

The District Attorney for Erie County, John J. Flynn, has announced that an 18-year-old male from Buffalo has pleaded guilty to one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and one count of Assault in the Second Degree before Judge Kenneth Case, a designated Youth Part judge.

After attempting to break up a fight outside McKinley High School on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, the adolescent offender intentionally shot a school security officer who ran toward the crowd. During the incident, the adolescent offender intentionally fired multiple rounds from an illegal weapon. As a result of the gunshot wound to the left leg of the security officer, the 27-year-old male was transported by ambulance to ECMC for treatment and release.

A 17-year-old adolescent offender will be eligible for youthful offender adjudication when he is sentenced on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. He remains in the custody of the Erie County Youth Services Center. 


Earlier this year, another Buffalo-area male who was 18 years old was sentenced for his involvement in the violence outside McKinley High School. As a result of his adjudication as a youthful offender, despite the opposition of prosecutors, the adolescent offender was sentenced to an indeterminate term of imprisonment between one and three years.

It is believed that the adolescent offender, along with other unknown individuals, assaulted a student outside McKinley High School in the City of Buffalo on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at approximately 3:45 p.m. Multiple stabs and beatings occurred during the altercation involving the 14-year-old male student.

As a result of multiple stab wounds, the victim was transported by ambulance to Oishei Children’s Hospital.

On January 4, 2023, the adolescent offender pleaded guilty to all charges in the indictment against him, including attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree (both Class “B” violent felonies). On January 4, 2023, the adolescent offender pled guilty to all charges in the indictment against him.
