Cherry Hill, NJ – A fire in a hi-rise condominium complex in Cherry Hill was sparked by improperly discarded smoking materials, according to the Cherry Hill Fire Department.

Early Saturday morning, Cherry Hill Fire Department units responded to a high-rise fire at the Mark 70 Condominiums.

“Crews arrived and extinguished multiple fires on multiple exterior balconies. The quick response and hard work of suppression crews kept the fire from spreading to the interior of the building. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries,” CHFD said in a statement today.

The investigation conducted by members of the Fire Marshal’s Office concluded the fire was accidental in nature. The cause was attributed to improperly discarded smoking materials.

The department said residents of large buildings such as the Mark 70 Condomiums should prepare ahead of time for the possibility of a fire.

“Residents of our high rise apartment and condominium communities should be especially familiar with exit paths and be prepared to utilize stairs as elevators are often inoperable during fire,” CHFD said.

The department recommends residents make sure they choose a building with full sprinklers inside and to be familiar with the building’s fire safety procedures. They advise residents to know the quickest routes to exit their building in case of a fire and to make sure none of the building’s doorways or exits are locked or barred.
