‘Bigotry And Racism’: Dems Blast Republicans Looking To Cut ‘Woke’ Spending

Democrats are pushing back against Republicans who want to cut “woke” handouts, including millions in funding for diversity, equity and inclusion, that have been tucked into the omnibus bill, according to The Hill.

Republicans on the House Budget Committee called for a stop to the “woke-waste” included in $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill such as  $3.6 million for the Michelle Obama Trail in Georgia and $750,000 for [email protected] Coalition, an organization advocating for those in the transgender Latin community, according to a Feb. 8 press release. Democrats said Republicans’ push to axe the spending of taxpayer dollars on diversity and LGBTQ initiatives is an effort to “disguise racism,” according to The Hill.

“It’s very exemplary of their approach, which is a blend of cutting support to working-class families while also lacing in bigotry and racism,” New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told The Hill. Republicans’ real goal, Ocasio-Cortez continued, is “to distract from the actual economic impact, negative economic impact, that they’re having on working families.”

The omnibus spending bill, passed in 2022 with opposition from just nine House Republicans, included 4,155 pages of items with 7,510 earmarks. Earmarks inside the bill gave $1.2 million for centers that support LGBTQ students at San Diego Community College and $105,000 for a LGBTQ youth mentoring program within Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As the federal debt rises, the “uncontrolled federal spending” is the “underlying reason” for the increase in the debt ceiling, House Budget Committee Republicans said in a press release.

“I think they cut the line pretty close to — maybe cross the line — when it comes to trying to disguise racism with something else,” Democratic Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee and a member of the House Budget Committee, told The Hill. “I think that’s what it is.”

In the omnibus bill, nearly $800,000 went to In Our Own Voices, Inc., a group that focuses on the economic survival and growth of the LGBTQ community, for “transitional housing and services for LGBT and gender non-conforming” individuals, while the Equity Institute based in Rhode Island, an organization working towards creating an “antiracist education system,” was given nearly $500,000 to focus on professional development for teachers.

Another $2 million was allotted to The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum for “capital renovation and facility infrastructure upgrade.” MLK Labor, a labor organization working toward “social and economic justice,” is also set to receive $2 million for its online hiring platform.

House Budget Committee Republicans called the $3 billion allotted for new USPS electric vehicles and $1 billion for “clean” garbage trucks, “wasteful and extreme climate spending,” according to a press release. The committee Republicans included the $60 billion for “environmental justice” programs as spending that must be cut.

“It’s a distraction from the issues that the majority of Americans actually care about,” Democratic Nevada Rep. Steven Horsford, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, told The Hill. “This is a waste of time [that] will go absolutely nowhere in this Congress.”

Ocasio-Cortez, Horsford, Kildee and Horsford did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
