WESTFIELD, NJ – An accident scene on Route 80 got worse on Thursday when the driver of a truck crashed into several police vehicles, a fire truck and an ambulance after ignoring the safety lights on the vehicles.
Fortunately, there were only minor injuries reported.
According to the Westfield Police Department, on Thursday evening, a truck traveling on Route 80 crashed into three New Jersey State Police vehicles, an ambulance, and a fire engine that were on the scene of a previous motor vehicle crash.
“The truck failed to observe the closed lanes of the previous crash and drove through the lane closure. Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported,” police said. “As a reminder, please use caution when approaching emergency vehicles, whether on the highways or on side roads.”
The Westfield Police Department reminds motorists that the New Jersey Move Over Law declares drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, garbage trucks and other highway safety vehicles displaying red, blue and/or amber flashing lights must now move over one lane or, if not safe to move over, then slow down below the posted speed limit.
