MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ – A deceased humpback whale was spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday floating near the Ambrose Channel, a shipping lane used by vessels in the New York City metropolitan area.

The humpback whale carcass was found about 4 miles off the coastline.

“Both (U.S. Coast Guard) Sector NY and (the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) deployed assets to attempt to relocate and further document the animal, and it was determined to be a humpback whale,” the NOAA said in a statement.

The NOAA said due to the whale’s location, safety concerns due to impending weather will prohibit a response at this time.

The whale is the tenth reported deceased in New York and New Jersey since early December.

Leaders at the Jersey Shore are calling for a 30-day halt on work off the coast in preparation for a large wind farm, a project championed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

This week, state Democrats rejected a Republican proposal to halt the project for 30 days.
