PATERSON, NJ – A New Jersey State Police trooper was shot in Paterson Wednesday night. Police say the officer, who remained unidentified, was shot in the leg, reportedly in the 28th Street and 9th Avenue area. The incident stemmed from a police incident involving a vehicle being followed by police from Route 20.

The officer was taken to the hospital and will require surgery at Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.

State Police Superintendent Colonel Pat Callahan said the officer was in great spirits and surrounded by his and his state trooper families.

Police searched the nearby neighborhood after multiple suspects shot at them. One person was detained, and two others are still at large.

The name of the arrested individual was not released.

“New Jersey state troopers go to work every day not knowing what that day will bring,” Governor Murphy said in a social media post this morning. “Such was the case early this morning in Paterson when a trooper was shot and wounded in the leg. We will ensure that all those responsible for this violent and heinous act are caught and brought to justice,”
