CHERRY HILL, NJ – The Cherry Hill Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing national telephone scam that is targeting residents of the community.

In recent days scammers have been posing as the Cherry Hill Police Department in an attempt to fraudulently solicit funds from unsuspecting residents.

“We have been alerted that scammers have been calling residents and claiming to be from the Cherry Hill Police Department. This is a professional scheme; these fraudsters appear to be “spoofing” their caller ID and it could display on your phone as the Cherry Hill Police Department, or as our non-emergency number: 856-665-1200,” the department said in a statement today. “These scammers have asked residents to pay fines over the phones, informed them that they have warrants, that a family member has been arrested, and have asked for monetary donations. The Cherry Hill Police Department will NEVER call you to ask you to pay a fine for yourself or for a family member, and we will never call you to inform you that you or your family member have a warrant.”

The department says that they are not soliciting donations and would never solicit money over the phone, asking for credit card information.

“We also want our residents to know that we are NOT soliciting monetary donations. Credit card information should NEVER be provided over the phone to unverified individuals and businesses,” the department added. “This is a nation-wide scam that many of our law enforcement partners across the country are also investigating.”

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, please DO NOT give the caller any of your personal or financial information, hang up, and call the non-emergency line 856-665-1200. Please be sure that you do not call the number back to do so, type the number into your phone instead.
