Body of woman found in Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment

NEW YORK, NY – Police in Brooklyn are investigating a homicide after a woman was found beaten and unresponsive inside her apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

On Friday, the body of Kelly Kwak was found inside 218 Gates Avenue, apartment # 1A while conducting a wellness check on her.

EMS arrived on the scene to treat Kwak, but she was unconscious and unresponsive. She had visible signs of trauma on her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.


Police detained a 32-year-old male inside the apartment and he was taken to NYC & Health & Hospitals/Woodhull Hospital for treatment and psychiatric evaluation. Police identified the man as the victim’s brother.

His name was not released. At this time, police have not filed criminal charges against him.

The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine Ms. Kwak’s cause of death.
