Dems Pressure Walgreens To Sell Abortion Pills

A group of Democratic senators pressured Walgreens to provide as much access as possible to abortion pills, including in states where abortion procedures are illegal, according to a letter sent to the company obtained by NBC News.
In response to Walgreens’ decision to not sell abortion drugs in certain Republican-led states, 17 Democratic senators pushed the company to dispense the drugs to the “strongest possible” degree and to be transparent with their customers on their policy when selling the pills in states where abortion is illegal, according to NBC News. Walgreens announced earlier this month that the company would not be dispensing Mifepristone, a popular abortion drug, in certain states due to their laws prohibiting abortion.
“At a time of great confusion about abortion access, your company has done the disservice of adding to it,” the letter, led by Patty Murray of Washington and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, read, according to NBC News.
“While we are well aware of threatening letters you received with regard to the distribution of mifepristone in certain states, the response to those pressures was unacceptable and appeared to yield to these threats—ignoring the critical need to ensure patients can get this essential health care wherever possible,” the senators added.
Other Democratic senators have also expressed their frustration in letters that Costco and Walmart have not made clear whether they would intend to go forward selling abortion pills.
