NEW YORK, NY – Police officers shot and critically injured a disturbed man who was reportedly having mental health crisis in the Bronx Sunday morning.

Police officers from the NYPD’s 52nd Precinct responded to 2685 Grand Concourse at around 10 am this morning after the suspect’s father called 911 to report his son having a medical episode and acting irrationally.

The man’s father told police his son was having a medical episode claiming he would kill any cops that showed up. Two officers arrived on the scene and were met by the father at the entrance to the apartment building.

According to Chief of Patrol John Chell, as the officers entered the building, the suspect, described by police as being clearly agitated, dropped a bag and produced a large kitchen knife.

“The officers repeatedly told the man to drop the knife, but he did not comply. Officers discharged a firearm striking him,” Chell said.

The 42-year-old suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Chell said detectives are reviewing the officers’ body worn camera footage as part of their investigation.

The victim did not live at the address in question but was visiting his father, according to Chief Chell. Chell said the entire interaction with police lasted just 28 seconds.
