The final freeze of the season has most likely passed us by and the Weather Channel is calling for seasonably mild weather for the next two weeks. You might want to put it off another month, but in New Jersey, now is the time to be thinking about getting your garden beds and soil ready for planting in just a few weeks.

Not only is April a great time to allow the soil to rest before planting, it’s a great time because the weather is great. If you wait until the last minute, in May, high temperatures and high humidity will be working against your body.

Get started early, and lose that winter weight gain at the same time!

April is the perfect time to start preparing your soil because it gives you enough time to amend the soil, allowing your plants to grow and thrive throughout the summer.

Here’s you soil prep checklist:

  1. Test Your Soil

Before you start preparing your soil, it’s important to know its pH level and nutrient content. You can get a soil test kit from your local gardening store or send a sample to a soil testing laboratory. Once you have your soil test results, you’ll know what nutrients your soil needs, allowing you to amend it accordingly.

  1. Remove Weeds and Debris

Remove all the weeds, grass, and debris from your garden bed. This will make it easier to work with the soil and ensure that your plants have enough space to grow.

Once you’ve removed all the weeds and debris, it’s time to amend your soil. Depending on the results of your soil test, you may need to add compost, manure, or other organic matter to improve the nutrient content of your soil. Work the amendments into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil with a garden fork or tiller.

  1. Add Mulch

Adding a layer of mulch to your garden bed can help retain moisture, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature. Spread a layer of mulch about 2 to 3 inches deep over the entire garden bed, being careful not to cover the stems or leaves of your plants.

  1. Let the Soil Rest

After amending and mulching your soil, give it a week or two to rest before planting. This will allow the organic matter to break down and integrate into the soil, creating a healthy environment for your plants to grow.

  1. Start Planting

Once your soil is ready, it’s time to start planting. Be sure to follow the instructions on your seed packets or plant labels for planting depth, spacing, and watering requirements. Water your plants regularly, especially during dry spells, and fertilize them as needed to ensure healthy growth.

Getting your garden soil ready in April is an essential step in ensuring a bountiful harvest. By testing, amending, and mulching your soil, you create a healthy environment for your plants to thrive.

With a little bit of effort, you can prepare your soil and start planting your garden, bringing a burst of color and flavor to your yard throughout the summer.
