Newark police seeking witnesses to fatal pedestrian strike

NEWARK, DE – A fatal accident occurred Thursday night on Ott’s Chapel Road north of Oklahoma State Drive, resulting in the death of a 38-year-old male pedestrian.

At approximately 10:09 p.m., the victim entered the northbound lanes of Ott’s Chapel Road from an unknown location. A 2007 Ford Taurus, unable to avoid the pedestrian, struck him in the right northbound lane.

Following the initial collision, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee traveling behind the Taurus also hit the pedestrian with the undercarriage of the vehicle. Both vehicles involved came to a controlled stop near the scene.

At the time of the collision, the area was dark and poorly lit. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and did not have any lighting devices. The 24-year-old male drivers of both the Ford and the Jeep were unharmed.


Northbound Ott’s Chapel Road was closed for approximately four hours for investigation and road clearance. Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the incident and asks anyone with information to contact Trooper First Class Hoffman at 302-660-3798.
